Peru is the home of the potato. Yet despite its strong agricultural heritage and prevalence of arable land, climate change is forcing urgent changes in farming. Every year, farmers in the sacred valley in the Andes move their crops further up the hills to avoid the rising average temperatures that threaten their yields. This issue is, of course, not restricted to Peru, as across the globe farmers face similar issues. Rising temperatures, and soil salinity, mean that fewer crops can be relied on.
