GENDER & SOCIETY
On the surface, Lebanon seems to be one of the most open societies in region. Underneath the surface, a patriarchal mindset is the prevailing agent in the country, and women’s rights are a mere afterthought. The Lebanese Penal Code is the biggest culprit of this, with archaic laws still in practice today, proceeding unchallenged by a Parliament that is historically and consistently underrepresented by women, and controlled by religious factions. The public’s lack of awareness on the details of our judicial system were a facilitating factor, especially evident in Article 522 of the Penal Code – one of the biggest stains on women’s rights in Lebanon. We created the campaign with that in mind, and with the goal of bringing the law under a harsh spotlight. If the Lebanese public realized that they, or someone they loved, are under threat of Article 522, it will push them into action.
